Cerro Tronador in two days: Medium to high difficulty. The base of the mountain, some 80 km. from the city, is reached by vehicle. Horses can be hired to reach 1600m., where rocky terrain begins. From here, after a walk of three hours, the mountain hut (Ref. Otto Meiling) is reached: it is sited next to a magnificent glacier, some 2000 a.s.l. The high altitude rock communities - typically developed in areas with great rainfall - are here associated with a volcanic substratum. During the descent, lenga (Nothofagus pumilio), underbush and forest, as well as the giant coihues (Nothofagus dombeyi) are encountered.
